Novemberr 27th - 3D work

Over the last day I've been working from my drawings. I have choosen a black and white enlarged photocopied image of a tree I had taken in the early stages of my brief. The image looks rough and harsh to touch I want to create this texture using clay.  I also want to create volume to make the clay almost look like there a natural rythem and flow to the bark. Here is a few images of the clay pieces i have created so far.

23rd November - 3D Work

Over the last two days I've created the bark out of clay. I've had to make it in  2 pieces so to fit the kiln but i might piece back together when they are fired. I've enjoyed working with the clay its easy to manipulate and translate into 3D. i want to continue to work with clay so I'm going to place latex over the bark and when it sets i will then press the clay in to it so to get a true print of the bark. This will then help me inform other works.

Sense My Space (19th October)

I came across two artists Wade Kavanaugh and Stephen B. Nguyen who created a massive paper tree using paper and wood. The sculpture is called White Stag. I love how they have created these powerful sculptures which seems to be over taking the building as well as erupting out of the space.

So i want to translate my drawings into 3D. I have decided to see how i can create the tree bark in as many material that have best show quailitys of the bark. I also want to look at the form of the tree so i have decided to use chickenwire doubled for strenght and possibly build the exterior with organic material such as twigs for texture. I believe other materials such as wax and clay could also capture most qualitys of the bark.

I've been continuing to explore the dept of the spaces within the tree by creating 3D pieces made out of paper and cardboard. I've layered different coloured paper and created a peeling back effect of the bark. these 3d pieces give the viewer and myself an idea of the dept and how the spaces are occupied with the use of layering.

I've came across a very interesting artist called Cara Barer. she uses discarded yellow pages books and manipulates their appearance to create very interesting shapes and changes the nature of the pages. i believe i can use this teqnique to maybe explore dept, in which i believe can move me forward with my investigation of the tree.

Cara Barer - The Books Project

October 2nd (Sense My Space)

So today I'm continuing to explore the bark of the tree. I have decided to do a number of analytical drawings to record dept and space as well as light and shade. Over the last few days i have photographed trees in which i have enlarged the images on a printer to A3 size and have tried to piece together each image to recreate the tree. I have found this a challenge as in each photo the light may hit the bark in separate areas and when pieced together can change the overall tone of the image. Possibly drawing into the image might make the tree look more in sync.

(Creating my Tree)

Today ive begain by reseaching a few artists just to get a better scope on how to create my tree. To see different angles i might take. At this point ive decided to go back out to the environment (forest) and photograph the tree from all angles and from there i am going to enlarge the images and jigsaw piece to piece back together. From there i will then know whether it will look better as a 2d image or a 3d image. I want my images to be in black and white to hold on to the atmosphere im creating so that you can sense my space.....
